While Add & Remove Programs did show an MS Office 365 entry, going through the Modify Repair On Line option did nothing other than remove the entry in the Add & Remove Programs list. Symptoms

Assume that a Microsoft Office Click-to-Run application crashes multiple times when you try to start it, and then you receive the following dialog box:

When you click Yes in the dialog box, the repair process does not start.

Cause

This is a known issue in Office Click-to-Run applications.

Workaround

To repair the Office Click-to-Run application, follow these steps as appropriate for the version of Windows that the computer is running.

Windows 10, Windows 8.1 and Windows 8:

1. On the Windows Start screen, type Control Panel.
2. Click or tap Control Panel.
3. Under Programs, click or tap Uninstall a program.
4. Click or tap MicrosoftOffice 365, and then click or tap Change.
5. Click or tap QuickRepair, and then click or tap Repair. You may have to restart your computer after the repair process is complete.

Windows 7:

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

2. Double-click Programs and Features.

3. Click MicrosoftOffice 365, and then click Change.

4. Select Quick Repair, and then click Repair. You may have to restart your computer after the repair process is complete.

   Note If the crash issue is not resolved after you use the Quick Repair option, use the Online Repair option as displayed in the following dialog box:

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the 'Applies to' section.

Upon starting Outlook I get the message that errors have been detected and that I need to run the Inbox Repair tool.

Where can I find that?

The Inbox Repair Tool can be started with scanpst.exe.

The exact location of this file depends on your version of Office and the installation type. It also depends on whether you have it installed on a 32-bit version of Windows or 64-bit version of Windows.

If scanpst.exe is unable to fix your pst-file, then it is too badly corrupted. You can then try repairing or salvage recoverable items via a 3rd party recovery tool such as DataNumen Outlook Repair (for pst-files) or DataNumen Exchange Recovery (for ost-files).

ScanOst.exe

When you connect to an Exchange server and need to check your local cache (ost-file) for errors you could run scanost.exe when using Outlook 2007. You can find this in the same location as scanpst.exe.

Office 365 Login

Outlook 2010 and later no longer have the scanost.exe feature. In this case, rename the ost-file to .old while Outlook is closed and Outlook will rebuild a new cache from the Exchange mailbox the next time you start Outlook.
